Tennis News Betty Warthen of Spartanburg, won the singles division of the Fourth Annual Senior Tennis Invitational at the Isle of Palms in Charleston by defeating Vesta Cornwell of Tryon 6-1. 6-0. She then teamed with Cornwell to defeat Jean Bolas and Doris Winship of Charleston 6-1, 6-1 in doubles Attempted Robbery An attempted armed robbery took place at Tryon Pharmacy Monday morning at 8:59. Two men with stockings over their head entered Tryon Pharmacy and a man with a gun went back to where Ellis Fincher, owner was working and told him not to move. Mrs. Linda H. Fincher saw the man with the gun and went out the door screaming When this happened the two men left and made their getaway in a black pick up truck. A Ford pick-up truck was located a short time later on Rock Cut Road in South Carolina. It was reported as having been stolen in Lyman, S. C. Mr. Fincher said that the Tryon Police where at the store within minutes of the robbery. Miss Elaine Barnette, another Tryon Pharmacy employee, was also in the store at the time of the attempted robbery. Outstanding mathematics students from 45 Western North Carolina high schools have entered the 11th annual Western Carolina University High School Mathematics Contest to be held April 30th. Students from Polk Central High School participating are: Algebra I. Gina Waldrop, Xan Ravan and Rhonda Scruggs; Geometry, Tim Helton. Kim Greene and James Dunaway; Algebra II, Janet Smith. Dee Callon and Deborah Culbreth; Comprehensive, Ricky Nelon, Perry Price, Randy McDaniel and Dugald Ross. Best Records In W.N.C. Some Polk County boys are at the top in track events in Western North Carolina this year Jeff Kelly of Polk Central high jumped 6'4" on April 22nd for a Conference record and is tied for first with David Hyatt of Sylva- Webster. Kelly is first in the long jump with 22’8'4", which he jumped on April 3rd at Tryon In the 200 meter dash Randy McDaniel of Polk Central is first with 22 4 seconds He ran this at Edneyville on April 22nd. John Janulis of Tryon is 1st in the 3200 meters with a 10:12 which he ran on the 22nd at Edneyville. Lee Atkins Elected Democrat Chairman Attorney Lee Atkins of Saluda was elected chairman of the Polk County Democratic Party at the convention Saturday at the courthouse in Columbus. Other officers elected were: 1st Vice President. Mrs Sally Jo Carter of Tryon; 2nd Vice Chairman, Warren Carson. Tryon; 3rd Vice Chairman. Phillip Feagan of Columbus; Secretary. Mrs. Genese Miller of Green Creek; Treasurer, Ken Williams of Mill Spring Attorney Wm A McFarland of Columbus gave the keynote speech and urged Polk County Democrats to offer well qualified candidates and then to unite behind them and return the courthouse to the people of Polk County
